Principles of Ethics and Personal Leadership (PEPL) is a 16-hour course that provides EMS and Mobile Healthcare (MHC) practitioners at all levels with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively interact with patients and their families, other medical personnel, co-workers, supervisors and community residents at large. The course covers topics and skills in the following areas: personal and professional values and beliefs, understanding the concept of "service beyond self", personal responsibility for ethical decision making, strategies for conflict resolution, and serving as an ambassador for the profession, agency, and community. Through course presentation, dialogue, and learning activities, including written and video case studies, students will explore the importance of ethics and personal leadership, identify their leadership roles in civic life as individuals, family members, professionals, and members of the community, and practice the skills important to the exercise of personal, ethical leadership. The NEO-FTP requirements have been developed to ensure that all individuals providing pre-hospital care have received appropriate training and are competent and confident in providing safe, professional and compassionate care on a consistent basis. Should there become a need for the department to modify the orientation period, the Deputy Chief-Medical Officer (DCMO), or designee, will make every effort to notify the employee with as much advanced notice as possible. Successful completion of the NEO-FTP is required in order to function independently as a clinician with RTAD. Completion of the NEO-FTP program does not in any way represent a contract, agreement or guarantee of continued employment.

On-Duty Shift Training "Ad-Hoc" will not exceed 1 hour in duration, unless necessary. On-duty training may include, but not be limited to, high risk/low frequency skills, driver’s skills, or other areas determined necessary through the Training Division’s ongoing assessment process (call review, QA, field assessment, etc.). On-duty crews, will be in a “last call” status, meaning they will notify Dispatch that they are out of service except for life-threating emergencies. The crew will be the last unit to be dispatched except for critical events in which the crew is in close proximity such as cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, or other like emergencies.

Simulation training will engage the participants in a simulated patient scenario to evaluate their critical thinking skills along with knowledge of the RTAD clinical operating guidelines. On-duty training may include, but not be limited to, high risk/low frequency skills, driver’s skills, or other areas determined necessary through the Training Division’s ongoing assessment process (call review, QA, field assessment, etc.). Driving an ambulance or client transportation vehicle is a privilege and a position of tremendous responsibility in which proper training is critical. The cone competency course is designed to measure driver proficiency in handling emergency vehicles. It is one portion of a comprehensive Emergency Meidcal Services Vehicle Operations Program and should be utilized with the overall program. Through its use, the progress of each emergency vehicle driver can be measured over a period of time.
